Peer Coaching Workshop

A service offered by the VI Math Initiative

Overview

This program is designed to provide teachers with a model(s) for interacting with one another in a way that generates data and raises questions that lead to personal reflection, insight and learning regarding the practice of teaching.

Peer Coaching is designed to be collaboration between two colleagues who alternate the roles of teacher and coach in order to help each other collect data for work on individual professional goals. When offered to a staff of teachers, this model can become a powerful, embedded professional development effort that provides time for personal reflection and leads to ongoing professional growth.

The components of Peer Coaching include a planning conference, classroom observation and reflecting conference. Protocols are provided for all phases of the process.

Process

This two-day workshop begins with an explanation of the three main components of a coaching session. Videotaped classroom presentations and role plays will be used to simulate real-life observations during which participants practice using the coaching protocol. Pairs of participants from individual schools will share the opportunity to perform as coaches as well as presenters. Participants will bring or develop in class an individual action plan detailing specific areas of focus for their in school coaching effort. In order to obtain one college credit for this course, participants must document the occurrence of five coaching sessions back in their individual schools.
