Portfolio Scoring

Welcome to The Vermont Institutes Portfolio Score Database

Many of you are familiar with the past process of portfolio scoring, where teachers completed bubble sheets, and submitted these along with a sample of portfolios to the state. This year, there is no collection of bubble sheets and sample portfolios as it occurred in the past.

However, The Vermont Institutes has developed a Portfolio Database, which is an assessment tool. This database tool will give teachers the opportunity to enter the scores from student portfolios, and provide the teacher with the percentage of students in his or her class who have scored at each applicable scoring level. Teachers will be able to log out, then return and add additional scores into their personal classroom file.

Once teachers have finished entering their data, VI will compile this information by school and supervisory union, and provide this feedback to Curriculum Coordinators, Principals, and Superintendents. VI will assume that all data will be entered by June 21, 2004, and will compile reports based on data entered by the end of that day. This information is not reported to the Vermont Department of Education and is solely for use as an instructional and assessment tool.

This data can be used to help guide instruction. For example, a math teacher may see that her students are having difficulty in Approach and Reasoning, and a Curriculum Coordinator may see that school wide, students are strong in Solutions but not in Documentation.

How to Use the Database

Click on one of the links below for your content area (writing or math). You will be asked to register before you enter the database. If you have already created a user ID, click Login.

Within the database, you will see a list of surveys at the bottom of the page. Choose writing (you will be able to enter the grade once you are in the survey), or the applicable grade for math.

Writing

Once the survey is open, enter the grade level, your school and supervisory information, date, teacher name, and student name. Then, enter the scores for the student. By clicking Enter Another, you can carry over the information and enter a new student. Enter as many students as you wish, then click Save and Exit. Please note that the information will not carry over if there is a blank entry form. These and any student data forms can be deleted by clicking [x].

Math

Once the survey is open, enter the grade level, your school and supervisory information, date, teacher name, and student name. Enter the title and score of the task. By clicking Enter Another, you can carry the information over and enter the scores of a new task for the same student. Or, you can change the student name and begin with a new set of tasks. Please note that the information will not carry over if there is a blank entry form. These and any student data forms can be deleted by clicking [x]. The results will be given based on the total number of scored tasks. For example, if there are a total of 60 tasks, the results will report the percentage students who scored at a particular score level for each category in the portfolio.

To View a Report

Once students have been entered, you can click on the report you would like to see which appears under “The Following Reports are Available.” The report will show how the entered students have scored—for example, in Math Approach and Reasoning, half of the students scored a 3 and half scored a 1.

Clicking on Home will take you to your personal classroom page.

By clicking Logout, you will exit the system. You may log back in and enter scores at another time.

Please email mwilson@vermontinstitutes.org with questions or if you are having problems.
